Eye Incident
Sound installation, 2016
Ticho House, Jerusalem
Eye Incident is a site specific project which made for the garden of Dr. Ticho's home. Dr. Ticho was an ophthalmologist who worked in Jerusalem from 1913 until the late 1950s.
His work focused on the treatment of chronic diseases which caused damage to the field of vision and lead to blindness. A significant element of the eye examination and treatment was an instrument called a Perimeter, a ball-like, dome shaped appliance that divided the patient’s visual field into quarters. During the examination the patient was asked to look straight ahead while their head was held in a fixed position.
The iron dome shaped monument is placed in the patio of the house, both protecting and imprisoning the spectator who steps inside. The sound heard through the stabilizing apparatus encompasses a repetitive instruction to look ahead in order to perform the examination correctly.
